Our
one-room building,
which is a John Calvin Stevens design and is
listed on the National Register of Historic Places, is inadequate to
provide the services of a modern library to our community. It
has not been expanded since it was built in 1912, although the town
has experienced a growth rate of 305 % between 1960 and 2000, the fifth
highest
in the state. We are not handicapped accessible and do not meet the
minimum
standards established for public libraries by the Maine Library
Association. Our expansion/renovation from 800 to 5,400 square
feet will provide space for books, materials, programs, services,
meetings/events, handicapped accessibility and ensure historic
preservation.
This project will have a favorable and ongoing impact on the quality of
life
for 3,700 + people.
Circulation
in
2006 was 11,883 items, averaging 228 items a week indicating
a vibrant, growing and well-used library.
January 2007 - The most recent expansion and renovation plans have been
cancelled. Any new information or future plans will posted here.
